In Memoriam​

​The members past and present of the American College of Clinical Engineering are the organization's greatest asset, an assemblage of the finest engineers and craftspersons of the art form.

On this page the ACCE pays homage to those members who have passed away.​

John Daniel Hughes, Jr. (4/17/1955-5/3/2018)

​Widely known for his long-time role as one of the hosts for the Technical Iconoclast sessions at AAMI conference, John passed away on May 3, 2018.  He is survived by his four children, Kevin, Colleen, Patrick, and Matthew. He was predeceased by his late wife, Karen Sherry (Wright) Hughes. ​

David P. Harrington, PhD (8/22/1941-9/27/2018)

​I am very sorry to report to the members the passing away of our founding member David Harrington recently.  As for many in the Clinical Engineering, Dave had been my mentor and very generous friend and colleague. He helped me in so many ways in my professional career. For many years, Dave and I alternatively (every other month) wrote articles in 24x7 magazine on CBET and CCE Preparation topics​.

David A. Simmons, ScD, P.E., FACCE, CCE, CQE (7/25/1935-10/28/2020)

​David A. Simmons, doctor and Army veteran, age 85, of Glen Allen, went to join his Lord in Heaven on October 28, 2020. He was born July 25, 1935, in Flint, Michigan. He is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca S. Simmons; children, John, Laura and William Simmons; grandchildren, Cameron and Ian Simmons; his stepson, Ken Newsome, his wife, Linda Newsome and their children, David Lee, Jennifer, Alex and Sarah; and several adorable great-grandchildren. Dr. Simmons was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Thomas Simmons and Dorothy Pearl Borton Simmons of Flint, Michigan; and his son, Richard Simmons.​

Thomas Joseph O'Dea, PhD, CCE (7/7/1938-12/8/2020)

​On Tuesday, December 8, 2020, Tom O'Dea, devoted husband and loving father and grandfather, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 82. Tom was welcomed with open arms to heaven by his son, Patrick, his brother Patrick, and his parents, Beatrice and Patrick. He is survived by his wife Kay, daughter Christy and son-in-law Christian Busken, and grandchildren Marin, Maura, and Jack O'Dea and Melina Busken.​

George I. Johnston (5/29/1929-5/12/2022)

​On Thursday May 12, 2022, George Johnston, devoted husband and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away at the age of 92. George is survived by his wife Arlene, daughter Kimberly, son-in-law Andrew, step-daughter Kelley, step-son Steve, 19 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.​

Mario Castañeda (5/20/1944-10/1/2022)

Early Saturday, on October 01, 2022, Mario Castañeda, a devoted son and loving father and grandfather, passed away in Bogotá, Colombia, at the age of 78. Mario is survived by his mother Inés, companion Arco Iris Lai, daughters Sandra, Carlina and son Neil, granddaughters Adeline and Rivera. And by his siblings, Luis, Manuel, Nubia, Flor Angela and Herman.​

Marvin Dale Shepherd, PE, FACCE (5/18/1932-4/13/2023)

Marvin began his career in the 1960s and is certainly one of the pioneers in clinical engineering. After graduating from a Fire Safety college program and becoming a professional engineer (P.E.) in California, he transitioned into the application of his newly gained knowledge to the bedside environment and to the prevention of failure modes of medical devices while being connected to patients.​
