08 April 2021 | Device Integration: Journey to Realizing Plug-and-Trust Interoperability | In 2005, ACCE teamed up with HIMSS, RSNA and IHE International to create the IHE Patient Care Devices (PCD) group. 15 years later, this collaborative effort has resulted in standards-based medical device integration specifications that are implemented in dozens of products worldwide and solve many of the basic challenges of flowing vital signs information to EHRs, or routing alerts to caregivers, or supporting infusion pump programming and 6-rights checking. Additionally, when the IEC 80001-1 risk management standard was first published in 2010, ACCE played an active role in helping its members understand and apply its processes to device integration projects.
Is patient safety and care quality improved? Is the clinical engineer’s role more impactful within the health care organization? Have these standards-based efforts delivered where it counts: at the patient’s bedside? Is there hope – and why! – that things will improve in the near future? Can see the roots of that in standards and products that are hitting the street … today?
This session on realizing the promise of “plug-and-trust” medical device interoperability provides a brief recounting of ACCE’s role in advancing standards-based device integration from the creation of IHE PCD in 2005 to the present, including current changes (such as the 2nd edition to 80001-1). It then looks at the reality of medical device interoperability (MDI) at the acute care bedside, especially for clinical engineers, and explains how current efforts underway will address many of the fundamental issues that have prevented realizing the 40+ years of promised benefits from true plug-and-trust MDI. | ACCE Educational Webinar Series |

10 January 2019 | Staffing Models & Justification to Management | Several models have been proposed for determining the proper staffing levels at CE departments. Few of them, however, have been based on or tested with large amount of actual data. A study of data collected from hundreds of acute care hospitals has shown that it is difficult to use CE data to build reliable models due to inconsistency in data collection. On the other hand, good correlations of staffing with several hospital indicators were found, suggesting that it is possible to build an accurate, but not precise, model. Such a model can be used as a good starting point for a more detailed analysis of the differences that could reveal substantive causes and opportunities for major productivity improvements. In addition, it could help to justify staffing increase to senior management. | ACCE Educational Webinar Series |

11 October 2018 | FDA Update - Service Regulation | In May 15, 2018, FDA published a report on the quality, safety, and effectiveness of servicing of medical devices in accordance with section 710 of the FDA Reauthorization Act of 2017 (FDARA). The report summarized FDA's existing rules and regulations, the responses to FDA's public outreach, the available evidence pertaining to the quality, safety, and effectiveness of medical device servicing, key issues, and on-going activities. Stakeholders have differing views about quality, safety, and effectiveness of servicing performed by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and third party entities, and the need for imposing additional regulation. Based on our review of information, we believe the currently available objective evidence is not sufficient to conclude whether or not there is a widespread public health concern related to servicing of medical devices, including third party services, that would justify imposing additional/different burdensome regulatory requirements at this time
Although we do not believe that additional, formal regulatory action is warranted, based on the available information and findings, we intend to pursue the following actions: Promote the Adoption of Quality Management Principles; Clarify the Difference between Servicing and Remanufacturing; Strengthen Cybersecurity Practices Associated with Servicing of Medical Devices; and Foster Evidence Development to Assess the Quality, Safety and Effectiveness of Medical Device Servicing. | ACCE Educational Webinar Series |
