Description: Medical devices continue to be integrated to various back-end applications to facilitate new technology, safety features, and even enable new clinical workflows. How do we best support this exciting technology development and manage the expanding integrated medical device environment?  Join this this complimentary symposium to learn more!

During this symposium, we will examine the challenges associated with managing medical device integrations and explore some of the new integration use cases. Our team of expert speakers will outline first-hand experience with the challenges posed by this integrated environment. The team will share insights and practical recommendations on how to best manage these integrated technologies. Topics covered will include updates on the latest regarding new medical device integration use cases, cybersecurity risks with integrated medical devices, and more.

Discover how device integration is not only enabling new workflows but also enhancing patient care and patient safety. Engage in insightful panel discussions with industry thought leaders representing healthcare organizations, the medical device industry, and researchers.

Program:

 8:30AM - 8:45AM
Symposium Introduction/Opening Mike Powers/Juuso Leinonen (co-chairs)
 8:45AM - 9:45AM
Session1/Keynote:
Bridging the Gap: Integrating Medical Devices with Hospital IT Networks
This presentation explores the convergence of CE and IT technologies, focusing on integrating medical devices into hospital networks. It highlights the importance of this integration for enhancing patient care, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring data security. The presentation covers the benefits, challenges, key components, and implementation steps of integrating medical devices with IT systems. It also includes a case study to illustrate successful integration and discusses future trends in the field.
Phil Englert, VP Medical Device Security

 10:45AM - 11:30AM
Session3: Tailored Alarm Management: Device integration, data collection, and display for reducing unnecessary noise and cognitive burden in intensive environments
Excessive device alarms have been a clinical safety issue for years. Toolkits are now available to help quality managers solve these problems through on-demand displays of aggregated data and analytics at scale.

This talk will focus on the features of one such tool, SickBay, which has been used successfully to reduce alarms and provide unmatched clinical situational awareness at healthcare systems across the country.
Raajen Patel, EVP of Innovation & Client Engagement, SickBay

Session4: Medical Device Interoperability:  The surprising relevance of the Clinical Engineer For over 40 years, vendor independent medical device interoperability (from the device itself) has been discussed, standardized, demonstrated at HIMSS conferences ... but little genuine progress has been achieved in the deployment of real products in real hospitals used with real patients. Is there a basis for hope that this will ever change? And is there a role that clinical engineering can and arguably must play in realizing this vision? In short: Are clinical engineers still...relevant? This session provides a look back at many of the initiatives that have come...and gone, reviews the hopes around the 2010 ISO/IEC "Safe, Effective & Secure" hospital I.T. network risk management standards ... their challenged implementation and arguably minimal impact. It then provides an overview of the current MDI standards-based efforts that were demonstrated at the 2023 & 2024 HIMSS Interoperability Showcases, and concludes with the emerging conversation regarding management of the clinical environment for plug-and-trust products, especially in Europe, and the unexpected resurgence in that discussion regarding the need for increased hospital clinical engineering competence and capability to manage these emerging product ecosystems. unexpected resurgence of the conversation regarding the need for increased hospital clinical engineering competence and ability to manage these emerging product ecosystems.
