Clinical Engineering Symposium - Presented by ACCE

 The Digital Backbone of Patient Care: Modernizing CE/HTM for Tomorrow's Healthcare

Date: Saturday, May 30, 2026, 7:30AM-10:15AM

Location: Colorado Convention Center, Room 207

Registration form: https://lnkd.in/gV-zV4W9

Description:

Healthcare’s reliance on interconnected medical devices, cloud platforms, and third-party services has transformed clinical care into a digitally dependent ecosystem, one where operational disruption can immediately threaten patient safety and continuity of care. This symposium explores how Clinical Engineering/Healthcare Technology Management is evolving to meet this reality, shifting from traditional device maintenance to stewarding the cyber-physical systems that power modern healthcare. The program highlights how AI-driven predictive maintenance, stronger cybersecurity practices, and lifecycle-based service models can enhance device uptime, reduce costs, and strengthen clinical resilience.

We will examine the changing competencies required of tomorrow’s HTM workforce, the complementary roles of CE and HTM professionals, and the importance of cross-generational training. Rather than replacing expertise, AI becomes an enabler, streamlining documentation, accelerating troubleshooting, and supporting care delivery in high-need environments and patient-at-home settings. This forward-looking approach ensures that technology remains aligned with the mission of safe, reliable patient care, never the other way around.

Education session, presented by ACCE: Medical Device Cybersecurity: The Known Unknown

Education Sessions, presented by ACCE

Education Session, presented by ACCE

Date: Sunday, May 31, 2026

Time: 4:15PM – 5:15PM

Topic: Medical Device Cybersecurity – The Known Unknown

Speakers:

  • Axel Wirth, Chief Security Strategist, MedCrypt;
  • Phil Englert, VP Medical Device Security, Health-ISAC, Inc.;
  • Mike Powers, Network Director Biomedical Engineering, St. Luke’s University Health Network

Description:

More than 15 years ago, security researchers confronted us with the new, stark reality that the very medical devices that are keeping patients alive could be hacked and turned into a deadly weapon. In years following, more research came to light and global regulators started to take action to ensure that future devices will be more secure and therefore safer. However, the possibility of harm, as stipulated by researchers and regulators, has yet to manifest itself as we have no documented evidence of patient harm through a targeted cyber-attack on a medical device.

This session will examine why we see this apparent disconnect between what, on one hand, is deemed possible and the observed reality on the other. What do we actually know about medical device security incidents and their respective consequences? Is it as simple as us not having been able to identify such incidents and collect sufficient data? Or is there a misalignment between how researchers approach the topic as compared to how cyber adversaries typically operate? To further our understanding, we will examine a few known cases of cyber incidents involving medical devices and contrast that with gaps in our knowledge. Collectively, as an industry, we should be striving to address the current blind spots and try to come up with a realistic and practice-based definition of the problem, ultimately allowing us to make the right decisions that will guide us to implementing the most effective defensive strategy.
