Why should I become Certified in Clinical Engineer?
The purpose of certification is to promote healthcare delivery improvement through the continuing assessment and recognition of the competency of professionals who support and advance patient care by applying engineering and management skills to healthcare technology. Individually, being a CCE demonstrates competency and professional recognition as measured by an examination designed by one's peers.
Does a candidate for certification have to be an ACCE
member or a member of any other organization?
No. There are no membership requirements for participating in the CCE program
Which organizations are responsible for Certification in Clinical Engineering?
The four key organizations are the U.S. and Canadian Boards of Examiners for Certification in Clinical Engineering (the Boards), the Healthcare Technology Certification Commission (the Commission), and the American College of Clinical Engineering (ACCE).
- The primary duties of the Boards are to develop the examinations and renewal processes and to review candidates for eligibility. The Boards report to the Commission
- The Commission is responsible for the overall management of the certification program. The Commission is a program of the ACCE
- The ACCE provides administrative and financial support for certification activities
The ACCE offers a CCE Study Guide and a certification review course. Does this mean that the ACCE is part of or that ACCE members have special access to the certification process?
No. The ACCE CCE study guide is written by an independent group of clinical engineers who are not associated with the Commission or the exam process. The ACCE administers its
certification review program independently of the Boards of Examiners and the Healthcare Technology Certification Commission. For more information or to register, please contact ACCE Secretariat at

Is the philosophy of the test to make it so difficult that it is very challenging to pass, thus limiting the number of CCEs?
No. The intent of the certification process and the exam is to establish minimum qualifications to be recognized as a CCE. This means that the test is designed so a well-qualified clinical engineer can pass it without great difficulty.
AAMI also has a CCE registry but does not administer a CCE program. Why is that?
AAMI lists CCE’s who were certified, or have renewed, under
AAMI's certification program; this program no longer offers new certifications. A list of CCE's certified under the current Commission’s program can be found
here.

Individuals Certified in Clinical Engineering (
, 156 Kb, updated 3/4/2025) The following individuals have received Certification in Clinical Engineering through the Certification program sponsored by the American College of Clinical Engineering and administered by the Healthcare Technology Certification Commission. Examination conducted by the US or Canadian Board of Examiners for Certification in Clinical Engineering. The definition of a Clinical Engineer is a professional who supports and advances patient care by applying engineering and managerial skills to healthcare technology. Certified Clinical Engineers have met eligibility requirements of education and professional experience and professional references, and have passed both a written and oral examination process.
Refunds
Applicants found ineligible for testing will be refunded $325.00. Applicants that fail the examination are not entitled to a refund. Fees will NOT be transferred to another testing date.
